Job Description
The Academic Advisor position serves as a member of a professional team providing comprehensive advising services for new and current Inver Hills Community College students. This position assists students to clarify their academic interests and prepare them for their intended major(s). In collaboration with the director and advising team members this position develops and monitors a comprehensive department plan to ensure continuous improvement. This position serves as a team lead for assigned academic programs and/or student populations. This position works effectively with Student Affairs offices, faculty, and academic departments to meet goals and objectives of the office, division and institution.

Responsibilities include:
  • Provide comprehensive academic advising to new, current and returning students, including international students, that includes knowledge and teaching students about college programs, policies and procedures, general transfer policies and procedures to all schools in MN state (public and private). As well as system level policies and procedures. Advising is delivered individually, within the classroom, and within groups.
  • Build and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders for assigned academic programs.
  • Plan, coordinate, and execute orientation operations related to advising.
  • Provide financial aid advising.
  • Provide outreach to identified student groups.
  • Support Testing Services by providing assessment advising.
  • Support institutional activities that promote career and major exploration.
  • Other duties as assigned related to students’ success, professional development and furthering the institution’s mission and vision. Participate in continuous quality improvement efforts within the department, Student Affairs and the college community through strategic planning, communication and collaboration, process improvement as well as other initiatives. Develop and maintain relationships with peers at other post-secondary institutions to share best practices and information.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Higher education experience in areas of academic support, advising, financial aid, career, educational planning, or teaching
  • Ability to work with a diverse population of students, staff and faculty
  • Ability to work well under pressure and respond to multiple demands
  • Strong ability to learn, understand, and explain a variety of college processes and degree requirements
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills (written, oral and electronic)
  • Interpersonal skills in providing individual and small group assistance to prospective and current students
  • Experience creating strategic partnerships
  • Problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Experience working collaboratively as part of a team
  • Possess presentation skills to effectively promote and represent the college
  • Competency with computers (i.e. Microsoft Office)

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in Student Affairs, Higher Education or related field
  • At least two years of professional experience in academic advising or related field
  • Knowledge of academic advising approaches and transfer processes
  • Understanding of the structure of academic programs offered at the college
  • Evidence of commitment to the success of culturally, ethnically and racially diverse learners
  • Knowledge of Minnesota State and IHCC student-related policies and procedures
  • Proficiency in a second language such as Spanish, Hmong, or Somali
